The graphic designer for Telos's first book, Eye of the Needle, recommended finding a Greek name which was
short and not impossible to pronounce! Telos means end or purpose in Greek. The purpose of Telos is to
celebrate the technique and artistry of leading contemporary textile artists around the world, and to
share their genius with a wider audience.
Telos's founder, Matthew Koumis trained as a classical pianist at London's Royal College of Music.
Following his marriage to a textile artist he became involved in the marketing of textile art, wishing to
present it at a level of professionalism enjoyed by more mainstream art media. In addition to writing and
publishing about textiles, Koumis gives lectures and marketing consultancy to artists around the world;
and has visited over 150 studios of leading textile artists in Japan, USA, Korea, Australia, Scandinavia,
the Netherlands, Great Britain and Canada whilst researching the Art Textiles of the World series and the
Portfolio Collection.
The first Telos books were printed in England, but since 2000 have been printed in Northern Italy. Telos
is run from Brighton, England, and benefits from informal consultancy with a wide range of textile
artists, curators, authors and editors worldwide.
We cross the world in search of the best textile artists working in embroidery, weave, tapestry, shibori,
felt, quilting etc, so that you can enjoy global inspiration from the comfort of your home!
