Since the launch of Telos EVM 1.5 in March, our dedicated development team has been working tirelessly to deliver Telos EVM 2.0. This groundbreaking upgrade brings a new level of speed, efficiency, and functionality to our EVM. Say hello to lightning-fast transactions, minimal fees, and unmatched performance! We’re thrilled to share what this means for developers, users, and the broader blockchain community.

“Three years and nearly 200 million blocks ago, we launched Telos EVM—a high-performance EVM supported by a custom-built RPC. While the custom RPC drove Telos EVM forward, it presented several challenges: complex maintenance, partial EVM RPC compatibility, suboptimal performance, and a steep setup curve for node operators.
Telos EVM 2.0 addresses these limitations directly. This update provides full compatibility with Ethereum RPC standards, optimized performance, and simplified node operations. It also unlocks access to a wide range of Paradigm ecosystem tools and integrations, with advanced customization options through the reth ExEx system.
This release marks a significant technical evolution for the Telos network and the developer community.”
— Jesse Schulman, CTO of Telos

What is in the update?

Telos EVM 2.0 introduces a host of powerful features and enhancements by adapting the reth Ethereum client, built by the Paradigm team. Here’s a quick summary of what you can expect:

  • Full Compatibility: Telos EVM 2.0 offers full RPC compatibility with Ethereum’s JSON-RPC standard. This includes both the parity and geth trace/debug methods as well as other custom methods also supported by the Erigon client, such as those to support otterscan.
  • Enhanced Tool Integration: EVM 2.0 integrates seamlessly with the reth/paradigm ecosystem, making it easier to utilize the broad range of tools built based on reth.
  • Execution Extensions (ExEx): This extensibility framework offers a flexible plugin system, empowering developers to build a wide variety of integrations and tools for custom use cases.
  • Performance Boost: Telos EVM 2.0 achieves greater performance, with significant improvements in RPS (requests per second) and reduced latency. This means faster transactions and a smoother experience overall.
  • Simplified Node Management: The streamlined setup and reduced resource requirements—requiring less disk space, CPU, and memory—make it easier for current node operators and opens the door for new participants. This enhancement enables individuals who may not have run a node previously to now join and contribute in version 2.0.
  • Unified Development for Future Growth: Telos EVM 2.0 is aligned with our ZK development efforts, leveraging Rust, the primary language for both projects, which will drive synergy and future growth.
  • Open-Source Rust Library: A new Rust-based library supports Telos Zero and Telos EVM 2.0 which is also being used by our ZK team for SNARKtor.

📊 Performance Metrics

The upgrade will primarily enhance requests per second (RPS) and reduce latency for RPC requests, such as balance checks, block retrieval, and other read-only operations. Transaction submissions, which represent a smaller fraction of total requests, are less impacted.

Initial testing indicates that our indexer achieved a synchronization speed over 10 times faster on version 2.0 compared to version 1.5. We expect to gather detailed metrics on RPS, block time, and gas fees once 2.0 is live and handling traffic, providing further insights soon—stay tuned.
